Former President Donald Trump is on track to secure a second, non-consecutive term as President, having revived his populist movement and garnered support for a GOP takeover. Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ) has projected Trump as the winner of Pennsylvania and Alaska, securing exactly 270 electoral votes.
Despite votes still being counted and several states yet to be called, Trump prematurely declared victory in the 2024 presidential race during a speech to his supporters. The Associated Press is expected to confirm his victory shortly, but Trump announced his win ahead of official announcements.
Trump’s victory in Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state, puts him just four electoral votes away from defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. A win in Alaska or any of the remaining battleground states would seal his return to the Oval Office.
The former president’s campaign capitalized on voter discontent with rising costs, immigration issues, and foreign policy concerns during the Biden administration. Trump’s policies, including promises of a large deportation operation, tax cuts, tariffs, and deregulation, resonated with his base.
Despite facing criticism and legal challenges during his first term, including impeachment proceedings and criminal indictments, Trump managed to secure a convincing victory in the 2024 election. He overcame challenges from his opponent, Vice President Harris, who focused on issues such as abortion rights and Supreme Court appointments.
“It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us,” Trump said. “It’s time to unite.”
“We have to put our country first for at least a period of time,” he added. “We have to fix it.”
Trump’s victory marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first president in over a century to lose and then regain the White House. His success in key battleground states, along with strong support from Latino and rural voters, contributed to his electoral win.
