Asian Aussie Business Times | SMI Unveils Support to Commonwealth Member States at CHOGM | The Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) has unveiled additional support for Commonwealth Member States during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Australia and Samoa, in conjunction with His Majesty King Charles III’s visits.

The initiatives launched include the establishment of a Pacific Hub in Australia to align industry, finance, and country efforts to meet global climate and biodiversity targets. Additionally, a Marine Mangrove Sanctuary has been launched in Samoa in partnership with SpaceX and Rotary International to restore mangrove ecosystems and mitigate sea level rise.

Furthermore, a Private Sector Training Programme for government officials has been extended to enhance public-private partnerships and project delivery within the Commonwealth. The SMI’s Impact Accelerator has also been introduced to provide support for governments in developing industry partnerships and investment-ready projects aligned with sustainable transition.

In addition, the SMI has made its Nature Risk Tool available to all Commonwealth member states to assist in assessing nature-related risks associated with physical infrastructure and urban planning. The launch of the Natural Capital on African Governments’ Balance Sheets Initiative aims to explore the integration of natural capital assets into national balance sheets.

During the launch at CHOGM, Jennifer Jordan-Saifi M.V.O., CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Dr. Hubert Danso, Co-Chair of the SMI Africa Council, highlighted the significance of investing in ecosystems to protect natural capital.

The SMI Pacific Hub will provide a platform for CEOs to collaborate on sustainability efforts across industry and finance in the region. The Marine Mangrove Sanctuary in Samoa will leverage technology from SpaceX to monitor and maintain the mangrove ecosystem. The Government Training Programme will support Commonwealth Member States in developing and implementing climate-related projects.

The SMI’s Impact Accelerator aims to mobilize private sector capital for sustainable projects, while the Nature Risk Tool will help assess the impact of infrastructure development on biodiversity. Founded by His Majesty King Charles III, the SMI is dedicated to accelerating positive results for nature, people, and the planet through real economy action.
